Eurobarometer survey on food safety in Europe

The Eurobarometer analyses the development of opinion among the European population at regular intervals and surveys the citizens of the European Union (EU) on political and social issues. In 2010, 2019 and most recently in 2022, a special edition commissioned by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) asked about food and feed safety issues. The survey of around 28,000 participants focussed primarily on people's risk perception with regard to food safety.

The data collected can help to improve the efficacy of communication on health risks in the food chain. The results of the survey can be used to tailor communication measures even more closely to their needs. The following topics were covered in the Eurobarometer:

  • Interest of the European population in food safety issues and factors influencing food-related decisions
  • Attitude towards healthy nutrition and food-related risks
  • Information channels used in cases of foodborne risks
  • Level of trust in actors involved in food production and the food safety process
  • Awareness of various aspects of the EU food safety system
  • Behaviour in the event of an outbreak of a foodborne disease

The full Eurobarometer on food safety in Europe can be found on the EFSA website.

The Consumer Monitor of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), a representative population survey, also provides answers every six months to the question of what the public thinks about consumer health protection issues. The current BfR Consumer Monitor can be viewed on the BfR website.
