The globalisation of food production and the food trade is leading to an ever-increasing choice of foods. However, it makes it more difficult to protect the health of consumers, as the safety of food and feed must be guaranteed along the increasingly complex global supply chains. As a result, stricter requirements for risk assessment, risk management and risk communication must be met. Today, food and feed safety can only be ensured through an international approach, including close cooperation and collaboration between different countries and organisations and their competent institutions.

The World Food Safety Almanac is a project of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) that serves to provide a clear overview of the various food safety systems in Europe and around the world. With the help of the online Almanac, users can gain an insight into the administrative structures of various countries in the area of food and feed safety.

The food safety systems of the currently 38 participating countries are presented in country profiles, which they update independently.

The Almanac serves as a source of information and reference for the interested public, members of risk assessment and risk management authorities, consumer associations, media representatives, the scientific community and trade associations.

The Almanac is intended to serve as a useful tool for readers, informing them about the relevant institutions and helping them to quickly and accurately find potential co-operation partners for international projects. In this way, the BfR aims to promote the harmonisation of existing methods and processes in food and feed safety and reduce unintentional duplication of work.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) was supported in the preparation of the Almanac by the EFSA Focal Points of the Member States and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
